Additional info/contents This beautiful choral describes the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. In this night the cycle of nature comes to an end; the character of the music is correspondingly melancholic - except for the final chord, which symbolises the new beginning. This contemplative work represents an ideal resting point for your concert and can also be used as a warm-up piece.

The winter solstice, a major astronomical event, marks the shortest day and longest night of the year. Over the centuries, the winter solstice has taken on a variety of meanings in various cultures and serves as the basis for numerous winter celebrations and rituals. The winter solstice occurs when the Earth's northern hemisphere is at its furthest point from the sun, which usually occurs on December 21st or 22nd. This phenomenon marks the beginning of winter and the point at which the days gradually become longer as darkness gradually recedes.

In many cultures, the winter solstice is an important moment associated with deep cultural and spiritual meanings. In Norse mythology, for example, the winter solstice was celebrated as a Yule festival, in which Yule logs and feasts played a central role. Similar celebrations can be found in other cultures, such as the Roman Saturnalia festival. The winter solstice is also significant in many religions. In Christianity it falls during Advent, which leads up to the birth of Jesus. In some Neopagan traditions, the winter solstice is celebrated as Yule or Midwinter, and rituals are performed to honor the light and warmth that accompany the return of longer days.

Today, there are a variety of modern winter solstice celebrations around the world. Some communities organize light festivals, parades or ceremonies that symbolize the hope for the resurgence of light. Others use the opportunity to reflect on nature and the cycle of the seasons.

The winter solstice has also found its place in art and culture. Many songs, poems and works of art reflect the significance of this turning point in the annual cycle and capture the mood of darkness, rebirth and hope.

The winter solstice is a fascinating event that is not only astronomically significant, but also deeply rooted in cultural and spiritual traditions. The variety of customs and celebrations surrounding the winter solstice reflect humanity's fascination with the changing seasons and the eternal cycle of darkness and light.
