(Il était une fois) s'inspire de quatre contes de Grimm: La Clé d'or, Le Petit Chaperon rouge, La Belle au bois dormant et Le nain Tracassin. Chants et narration alternent sans interruption, tandis que l'orchestre joue un rôle capital dans cette pièce au conenu et aux sonorités très variés: sons harmonieux ou terrifiants, ambiance rêveuse, majestueuse ou grotesque, climat pittoresque ou triomphant...
