Programme notes *: A stratospheric jump is a parachute jump from the stratosphere, i.e. a jump from a height above the height of 8 to 18 kilometres, depending on the latitude. A stratospheric jump differs considerably from a simple parachute jump. First of all, the required altitude cannot be reached by air, which is why a helium balloon is used instead. In addition, the jumper needs a space suit in the stratospheric environment for protection. The speed reached in free fall is up to 1,300 km/h. The speed of the balloon is up to 1,300 km/h. A brake parachute can be used for a stable free fall. The history of stratospheric jumps is closely linked to the development of aeronautics and space travel in the 1950s, which initiated the first stratospheric jumps for research and development purposes. The US project Excelsior, in which Joseph Kittinger completed three jumps in 1959 and 1960 and set several records, became particularly well known. Michel Fournier's attempts in 2002, 2003 and 2008, in particular, became more widely known, but they failed. The Red Bull Stratos project ended successfully in 2012 with the jump of the Austrian Felix Baumgartner from an altitude of 39 km.
