Programme notes *: Louis XIV chose the sun as the symbol of his royal coat of arms. As an absolutist ruler, Louis saw himself as appointed by God. His word was law. As supreme head of state, he had all-encompassing and sole power. He was king by the grace of God, appointed by God and thus at the same time untouchable. Like the sun, he was the centre of the state. At least that is how the king saw himself.
