Additional info/contents William Kamkwamba was raised in Malawi, an African country where magical thoughts prevailed but modern technology was a mystery. From books he read, young William imagined building a windmill that might, one day, bring electricity and water to his village and drastically change the lives of his neighbors. Hoping to someday study science, his country was debilitated by famine that forced William to drop out of school and forage for food as thousands throughout the country died of starvation. However, William's passion remained indefatigable and, using scrap metal, tractor parts, and bicycle halves, he ingeniously built a crude yet operable windmill that powered four lights and his radio. News of William's achievement soon spread beyond his country's borders, and the young boy who was once thought of as crazy became a hero to many around the world.

William Kamkwamba is an engineer, entrepreneur and author from Malawi who gained international fame for his incredible feat of building a wind turbine from scrap parts. Born in 1987 in Masitala, a small village in Malawi, William grew up in poor circumstances. His family ran a small farm and it was a constant challenge to produce enough food and pay the children's school fees. When William was 14 years old, he had to drop out of school due to a severe drought that destroyed the crops and caused a famine. Although William could no longer go to school, his thirst for knowledge remained unquenched. He spent his time reading books in the local library and educating himself on various subjects. It was during this time that he came across a book on renewable energy and got the idea to build a wind turbine to generate electricity for his village.

With a lot of ingenuity and determination, William set about building his wind turbine. He collected scrap parts and materials from his neighbourhood, including an old bicycle frame, PVC pipes and rubber hoses. After many months of hard work and numerous setbacks, he finally managed to build a working wind turbine that could generate electricity. The windmill provided light to his home and allowed his family to work and study after dark.

The story of William and his windmill quickly spread throughout his community and beyond. He became a local hero and eventually received a scholarship to study in the United States. William graduated from the prestigious Dartmouth College and returned to Malawi to continue his work. Today, William Kamkwamba is a role model for young people in Malawi and around the world. He has written several books, including "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind", which tells his story and has been translated into several languages. William continues to advocate for renewable energy and education in Malawi and inspires people worldwide to pursue their dreams and make a positive contribution to their community.
