Programme notes *: Macedonia is located in the centre of the Balkan Peninsula and was the southernmost constituent republic of the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. It borders Serbia to the north, Bulgaria to the east, Greece to the south and Albania to the west. The state of Macedonia corresponds roughly to the north-western half of the historical region of Macedonia. Macedonia has a history of thousands of years, as can be seen from traces of human existence from the Paleo period in the Petralona Cave in the Chalkidhiki Peninsula. The peak of this northern Greek region was the reigns of Phillip II and his son Alexander the Great in 300s B.C.E. Their contribution to human history was immeasurable and the spread of the Greek language and culture to the then known world changed the course of history. The region of Macedonia is one of the richest in terms of musical expression and dance. The music of Macedonia belongs to the musical idioms of mainland Greece, but also presents an interesting internal diversity due to the large mass of refugees who immigrated to Macedonia. The music of Macedonia is characterised by regular rhythms and harmonic melodies, but there are strong differences in traditional music in the different regions, which is also characterised by the variety of different instruments: In addition to the usual ensemble of violin, clarinet and laouto (lute), we find combinations of zournas (oboe-like), of bagpipes with drone and daires (a large tambourine), of lyra (pear-shaped violin) and of drums. The composer has long been fascinated by the music of the former Yugoslavia. After a long search for suitable music for this composition, he happened to come across traditional music from Macedonia and decided to write a work about it. The work Mazedonia is composed of three parts: While the first part is composed only in the style of Macedonian music according to its own experience, in the following two parts it quotes traditional folk songs: In the slow middle part the song JOVANO JOVANKE, which has the following text in the translation: JOVANO JOVANKE, you sit at the Vardar, bleach the white linen and look up. Jovana, I am waiting for you to come into my house. But you must not, my heart, Jovana. Jovana, your mother won't let you come to me, my heart, Jovana. And in the last part the song DUNJE REIKE.
