Programme notes *: additional text

During the first bars, the folk tune immediately appears in the euphoniums and basses, leading to a number of lyrical bars. These bars form the intriduction to a faster tempo (Allegro risoluto), in which the tune is exposed in fragments by euphoniums, baritones and flugelhorn, answered in canon by the trombones. In the following Allegro molto, concertino-like playing can be heard in various instrument groups, alternating with a new, tuneful melody. This movement closes with the folk tune in the trombones, this time muted.

The second movement is a ballad in which the folk tune sounds in the major. After an introduction on muted cornets and trombones, followed by soft brass, the melody of the folk tune appears in the euphoniums and baritones - in a lyrical setting. For a moment, the key returns to the minor where instruments groups imitate each other. With a flugelhorn solo we go back to the major. Following an interlude, we hear an ornamented variation, performed by a solo cornet and solo euphonium, after which a postlude with muted cornets and trombones emerges.

The last movement materialises in a brisk Allegro vivace, initially complemented by chromatic lines in the accompaniment, and a striking rhythm, alternating with crotchet triples in the percussion. Then, the blues comes out in the cornets and horns, accompanied by a jazzy rhythm in which the atmosphere of the Bolero by Ravel surfaces briefly. Through a parallel triplet passage, this leads back to the initial theme of this movement, which can now be heard in various instruments.

Subsequently, the folk tune is played again in its pure form, by the euphoniums, to which the flugelhorn, and later the solo cornet, respond. Via a few syncopated bars, we get to the beginning of the tune - now performed in the major by cornets and horns respectively. The final passage comprises a melodic line in long notes, leading towards a vivacious closing in crotchet triplets.
