Yes, it may be a stereotype, but the Highlands are in fact the Scotland that is engraved in the imagination of every Scotland lover. It is the wonderful mixture of culture, history, architecture and an unparalleled landscape. One thinks of a wide sky, impressive landscapes, excellent food and hospitable people - there is really nothing better if one wants to escape from everyday life and simply switch off. Unpredictable. Indomitable. I can't believe this is Scotland.

You can get lost in the majestic mountains and along the mysterious holes on your tours through this beautiful country (of course not literally). The views are simply breathtaking. Great Britain's largest national park shows dolphins having fun off the coast of Moray, you can admire the spectacular lake scenery of the Northern Highlands, walk in the shadow of Britain's highest peak, Ben Nevis, or explore the impressive islands and coastal landscapes. And if you haven't heard of Loch Ness, Scotland's most famous lake, something very special awaits you!

The natural playground of the Highlands is eager to be discovered and the region is an attraction for adrenaline junkies. No wonder - Fort William was named the "Outdoor Capital of Great Britain"! The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup takes place here and you can climb world-class mountains or try sports across the highlands such as fishing, golf, sea kayaking, white water rafting, hiking in gorges, Munro bagging, snow sports and much more.

Over the highlands lies a touch of mystery and the turbulent history of the region has left behind some of the most beautiful and romantic castles in the world. From Dunvegan Castle on Skye and Brodie Castle in Moray to Castle of Mey in the Northern Highlands - the castles are really as wonderful as they are generally said to be! But it's not all about the castles, even if they are quite impressive. In Glencoe's Visitor Centre you can learn more about the notorious massacre, the Glenfinnan Monument is a tribute to the Jacobite uprisings, and in the Highland Archive Centre you can explore the roots of culture.
