Procession to Calvary describes a number of scenes from the painting The Procession to Calvary (1564). Brueghel has hidden the main character, the figure of Christ collapsing under the weight of his cross, amongst the jostling crowds, joking and arguing on their way to Mount Calvary (Golgotha). The executiner's servants seem to quarrel about whether they should help Jesus carry his cross or not.

On a raised rock, at the front on the right, Brueghel placed the traditional 'weeping woman below the cross', who are comforted by the apostle John. The figure with a beard on the right could represent the painter himself.

The composition opens with an overall depiction of the painting, featuring the multitude of impressions when seeing the painting for the first time. Next follows the discovery of the many individual scenes, like children frolicking in the dancing caprioles of the Eb clarinet and oboe, and the via dolorosa of Christ, represented by the melancholic bassoon solo. The musical translation of the letters of the name Brueghel serves at the leitmotif, which is incorporated rhythmically as well as melodically, and forms the basis of the accompaniment. The main theme, the thread throughout the composition, has also been composed to fit within a harmonisation of the leitmotif. The prominent presence of religious figures in the painting has been interpreted too. They are featured in the Kyrie from the Gregorian Requiem Missa pro defunctis - 'Mass for the dead'. This Kyrie appears a number of times, as a counter theme, the main theme, and accompanying theme, in various harmonsiations. The seven blows on the anvil in the final section symbolize the crucifixion of Christ.
