Additional info/contents Townscape was composed for the centenary of the St. Cecilia concertband from Oudenburg, a town which also inspired the composer throughout this work. The first part depicts a train slowly approaching from afar and then vanishing into the distance again. This is rendered by a sort of repetitive pulse in the music. This is followed by some serious action with jet skis on the Sinnesael lake. Their spectacular twists and turns are transformed into an exuberant theme and a middle section with several changes of time signature. After that comes a restful, lyrical Nocturne, a musical painting of the mill at night. The work concludes with a lively finale that is an ode to daily life in Oudenburg, a place where people take initiative and there is plenty to see and do.

Oudenburg is a Flemish city in Belgium, about 5 km southeast of Ostend. Like Tongeren, Oudenburg developed from a Roman settlement. Between 180 and 250 A.D. a fort was built here and the civil settlement was transformed into a military base. The camp stood on a headland in the swampy coastal region. The fort was part of a fortress chain along the North Sea and canal coast in Belgium, France and England, the so-called Saxon Coast (Litus saxonicum). It served as a defence against Saxon and Frisian pirates. In the early 5th century it lost its military importance, the garrison was withdrawn to Italy to defend the heartland of the Western Roman Empire against Germanic invasions. The fortress fell into disrepair in the following centuries. It is unclear whether it still played a role in the defence against raids by the Vikings. Later the fort served as a quarry for new buildings in the region. Count Balduin V of Flanders negotiated the stones as far as Bruges. They were used there, among other things, for the construction of the castle there. The stones from the fort walls were also used in the church of St. Peter (1056-1070). The monastery was destroyed during the French Revolution.
