Composer Aulio, Maxime
Difficulty level 5
Additional info/contents Les Trois Mousquetaires (The Three Musketeers) was commissioned by Miraphone for the Miraphone Tuba Quartet and the Musique des Gardiens de la Paix (Music of the Peace Guard) in Paris. The piece was premiered by these ensembles on June 28, 2003 in Guebwiller, France. Even if you have never read a line of the mysterious novel The Three Musketeers (1844) by Alexandre Dumas, father, you have at least heard of the “four invincibles”. - from the four extraordinary names D'Artagnan, Athos, Portos and Aramis and from their unique motto "All for one and one for all". The musical structure of Les TroisMousquetaires focuses more on a person's particular character traits than on their influence on the book's plot. Maxime focused on D'Artagnan, the sensitive, romantic and perfect gentleman who is easily charmed by women such as the lovely Constance Bonacieux and the perfidious Lady de Winter, whose beguiling beauty seduces him. The first movement - D'Artagnan - sticks closely to the character of the young rural nobleman from Gascony, who proves to be heroic and enthusiastic under all circumstances. The second movement, entitled Constance Bonacieux, is romantic, tender and passionate. The third and final movement is as duplicitous as the enchanting femme fatale Milady de Winter.
