In programmatic terms, the Troika Fantasy tells a short tale about Russia. This huge land is the home of the famous Volga, a river which appears in many sagas, fairytales and stories of adventure. One of these stories tells of the strong men who transported wood for thousands of kilometres along the river in their great boats. Many songs were sung on the way, a particularly well-known one being the “Song of the Volga Boatmen”. The TROIKA FANTASY begins in the bass group with this very theme. Later, the men drive into a village in a cart drawn by three horses, a combination known as a “troika” in Russian. In the village a celebration is under way, during which the villagers dance a “trepak”. The music in the Troika Fantasy becomes faster and faster, and the colourful piece ends with a shout of “TROI-KA!”

The term "troika" comes from Russian and literally means "team of three". It is used in various contexts to describe a group of three people or objects. The most famous use of the term refers to a traditional Russian style of sleigh riding.

In Russia, the troika is a traditional form of sleighing in which three horses are harnessed side by side to a sleigh. The middle horse runs at a trot while the two outer horses run at a canter. The troika was a popular means of transport in winter Russia and was often used for long journeys across snow-covered landscapes.

The term troika is also used in music to describe a piece or dance performed by an ensemble of three musicians or dancers. In classical music, there are many famous trios for various instruments, such as piano trios, string trios and wind trios.

In politics, the term troika often refers to a group of three people who perform a political or diplomatic task together. For example, a troika may consist of representatives from three different countries or organizations working together to solve a specific problem or accomplish a specific task.

Overall, the term troika is versatile and can be used in different contexts to describe a group of three people or objects. The term is particularly common in Russia, where it is deeply rooted in the country's culture and history.
