Programme notes *: additional text

The letters WOSN stand for the four cardinal points (west - east - north - south). In this work, the composer has attempted to translate these four regions of the world into music in the form of a fondo.

The rondo theme is held in western tradition, and after a slow introduction it becomes concise. The East is represented by pentatonic melodies. After the reappearance of the main theme, percussion instruments make reference to southern climes by recalling the ritual dances of the Indians or Aborigines of Australia. In the north, the composer used the Finnish folk song "Lobet mir mein Schätzelein".
