The Austrian writer Angelika Guldt writes in her essay on "Mystic Stones": "Near Zwettl there is a stone pyramid in the forest. I think nobody knows exactly who built it and for what purpose. Some years ago it was damaged and partly destroyed in a heavy storm. But when I saw it for the first time, it was still standing, about six metres high and as if fallen out of time. (We) saw the pyramid in the middle of a clearing, around it a group of diviners, who in their own way were trying to track down the mysticism of the primeval monument. I do not know what the divining rods indicated to their bearers, but they helped to intensify the feeling of mystery".

Apart from this stone pyramid, there are other "Mystic Stones" in the Waldviertel (Lower Austria): The "globe", a 500 tonne, roundish hardening stone with a diameter of 7 metres. Its shape is reminiscent of a globe.

The "Kierlingstein", a natural monument, is a six metre long stone, which lies on 4 large blocks of stone. On the upper side of the stone there is a 40 cm deep, bowl-like depression, which is always filled with water. It can be reached by a wooden ladder, because according to a legend the water is said to have healing properties and to give beauty.

The "sacrificial stone" is located in the middle of a group of trees. This striking three metre high sacrificial stone contains the largest bowl of the Waldviertel. It is about 3 m² in size and beautifully shaped. It is unclear whether this bowl was created by human hand or naturally and was really used for blood sacrifices.

Finally there is the "humming stone", which transforms the own voice into body vibrations and the "wobbling stone".

Whether the composer describes a selection of these stones with "Three Mystic Stones" remains just as mysterious.
