Anthony Plog

Uraufführung: 4. und 5. August 2006 in Breckenridge, CO, USA; National Repertory Orchestra unter der Leitung von Carl Topilow.

The Scherzo was originally written for the Summit Brass Ensemble at the suggestion of David Hickman. This version for wind ensemble/concert band is the third version of this piece, with the second version being for symphony orchestra. From the beginning of the piece there is an energy that continues to the end and grows in intensity through the use of both mutes and orchestration.

The Scherzo was originally written for the Summit Brass Ensemble at the suggestion of David Hickman. My intent in writing the piece was to showcase the technical virtuosity of this marvelous group. In addition I wanted to put on display the many colors available to the brass ensemble through the use of mutes.
The Scherzo was orchestrated in the winter of 2006, and this time uses the virtuosity and colors of the orchestra. This second version is dedicated to Carl Topilow, who conducted both the brass ensemble and orchestral premiers of the piece.

First performances: August 4 and 5 2006 in Breckenridge, CO, USA. National Repertory Orchestra conducted by Carl Topilow.
