Additional info/contents	Wie das Blechbläsersextett La Pittura ist Artemisia Sketches eine Suite aus Themen und Motiven einer werdenden Oper über die Laufbahn der brillanten Barockmalerin Artemisia Gentileschi. Die drei Sätze stellen spezifische Werke von Artemisia oder traumatisierende Szenen aus ihrem Leben dar. Die tonale Struktur beruht auf übermässigen Dreiklängen (c-e-gis, cis-f-a, d-fis-ais, dis-g-h) und den vier neunstufigen Tonleitern, die diese Dreiklänge ausfüllen. I. Sibille Als Opfer einer Vergewaltigung wird Artemisia bei einem Prozess am päpstlichen Hof in Rom noch zusätzlich erniedrigt. An ihren Händen wird die 'Sibille', ein Folterwerkzeug, angewendet, damit sie ihre Aussage widerruft. II. Präludium zu 'Lucretia' Die römische Sage, die die Vergewaltigung der tugendhaften Lucretia erzählt, war eines von Artemisias wichtigsten Studienthemen. Das Bild zeigt Lucretia, wie sie den Himmel betrachtet und über Selbstmord meditiert: Mit der Rechten greift sie sich an die Brust, mit der Linken zückt sie das Messer. III. 'Susanne und die Alten' (Aria und Variationen) Mit 17 Jahren, in der Zeit, als sie vergewaltigt wurde, malt Artemisia 'Susanne', ein eindring-liches Jugendwerk. Das Thema schildert die sexuelle Belästigung: Zwei Männer umkreisen die verletzliche, nackte Susanne. Die beiden komplottieren murmelnd, während sie panisch zurückweicht. Artemisia Sketches, as my brass sextet La Pittura, is a suite based on themes and motives from an opera-in-progress about the brilliant Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi. The pitch structure is generated by the available augmented triads: C-E-G#, C#-F-A, D-F#-A#, D#-G-B, which are arranged to yield various scales and rows. The three movements reflect either specific paintings or traumatic episodes in Artemisia's life. I. Sibille A victim of rape, Artemisia was subjected to further humiliations at a notorious trial in the Papal court in Rome. The Sibille was a torture device applied to her hands in an effort by the defense to compel her to recant her testimony. II. Prelude to 'Lucretia' The Classical tale of Lucretia, a virtuous woman wronged, was the subject of one of Artemisia's deepest character studies. In the painting, Lucretia looks toward heaven as she contemplates suicide. Her right hand grasps her breast while her left hand wields the dagger. III. 'Susanna and the Elders' (Aria with Variations) An astonishing early work, 'Susanna' was painted when Artemisia was about 17, near the time of the rape. The subject of the work is an Apocryphal story dealing with sexual harassment. In the painting, two men hover over the naked, vulnerable Susanna. They whisper together conspiratorially while she recoils in horror and mortification. Prélude à 'Lucrèce' Le conte classique qui relate le viol de la vertueuse Lucrèce fut l'un des sérieux sujets d'étude d'Artemisia. Le tableau montre Lucrèce regardant le ciel et méditant sur le suicide: sa main droite agrippe sa poitrine tandis que l'autre brandit le poignard. III. 'Susanne et les aînés' (Air et variations) À l'âge de 17 ans, époque du viol, Artemisia peint 'Susanne', œuvre de jeunesse poignante.
