Additional info/contents Three Washington Statues was commissioned by the United States Army Band "Pershings Own", led by Colonel Thomas H. Palmatier.

Washington D.C. has some of the world's most famous buildings, monuments and statues. Philip Sparke took three of these as inspiration for this piece. For example, he describes the grandeur of the "Lincoln Memorial", with its Doric columns built in the shape of a Greek temple. The "Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial" recalls Martin Luther King's legendary speech "I have a dream". The reverent yet powerful music is a tribute to this speech. The statue "Encore" commemorates the world-famous African-American composer, pianist and bandleader Duke Ellington. In this final movement, Philip Sparke captures the virtuosic, energetic and unique dynamics of Duke Ellington's music.

The Lincoln Memorial, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, and Duke Ellington's "Encore" are all significant cultural landmarks located in Washington D.C.

The Lincoln Memorial is a national monument built to honor the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. The memorial features a massive statue of Lincoln sitting in a contemplative pose, surrounded by inscriptions of his most famous speeches and quotes. The Lincoln Memorial is one of the most iconic and visited landmarks in Washington D.C., and it serves as a symbol of freedom and democracy for people around the world.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is a relatively new addition to the National Mall in Washington D.C., having been dedicated in 2011. The memorial features a statue of Martin Luther King Jr. standing between two massive stone walls, each inscribed with some of his most famous speeches and quotes. The memorial serves as a powerful tribute to the civil rights leader and his contributions to the fight for racial equality in America.

Duke Ellington's "Encore" is a bronze sculpture located in the heart of Washington D.C.'s U Street corridor, an area known for its rich history of African American music and culture. The sculpture features a life-sized statue of Duke Ellington seated at a grand piano, with a larger-than-life pair of hands playing the keys. The statue serves as a tribute to Ellington's contributions to the development of jazz music and to the rich cultural heritage of the U Street corridor.

Together, these landmarks represent some of the most important aspects of American culture and history, from the struggle for civil rights to the development of music and the arts. They serve as powerful reminders of the values and ideals that have shaped the United States over the course of its history.
