With a height of 3,798 meters the Grossglockner is not only Austria's highest mountain, but also one of the most majestic peaks of the Eastern Alps. Again and again inexperienced mountaineers have tried to climb Austria's most well known peak. Inexperience and mountaineers overestimating their own capabilities are the two main reasons to blame for the high number of deaths in Austria's alpine landscape – 1407 deaths between 2000 and 2007. Furthermore, swift weather changes due to the exposed location of the peak can also doom climbers. The Großglockner's name probably derived from the ancient Slowenian word "Klek”, which was used to describe a pointy peak.

The musical theme of this composition stems from a plain song, taken from the Austrian folk song In die Berg bin i gern, which is repeated in various forms through out the piece. This reflects the Großglockner presence and the mountain's various facets, which make it one of Austria's most diversified attractions.
