Additional info/contents The programmatic composition Of Castles and Legends is based on the legend of the White Maiden at Kugelsburg Castle. The legend tells of a maiden who fell to her death from a tower to escape being raped by a ruthless robber baron. To this day, she is said to haunt the old walls as a good spirit. An exciting old subject that Thomas Doss used as inspiration for this exciting new wind orchestra work!

Near the German city of Volkmarsen, on a high hill, lies an impressive castle - called the Kugelsburg. Thick walls and sturdy towers once formed solid protection for the Godfearing families that lived there and served the church in good conscience. But times changed and insurgent, evil knights took posession of the castle. One day, they abducted a beautiful maiden who was travelling with her father - a salesman - along the road below the castle. She was pious and devout, and prayed to the Lord for help. But the predatory knights did not change their ways, and forced her to take part in their wild feasts.

One evening, when the knights were behaving grossly again, the maiden raised her voice and asked if she could retire to her own room. Through the sounds of revelry she managed, with the aid of a well-meaning shield-bearer, to get upstairs via the spiral staircase. When she had found peace and quiet, one of the villains appeared - with evil intentions. Panicstricken, she climbed on the window-ledge and threatened to jump. Stirre up by the wine, the drunkard came closer. The maiden prayed and pleaded, but it was not use. Scared to death she commanded her spirit into the hands of God and jumped into the abyss.

From that day onward, she appeared from time to time, in shiny white garments, a sign of eternal heavenly joy. Thus she received the epithet "the white maiden". Every time she appeared, something good happened, so that nobody was afraid of her. It was believed that she kept death and destruction at a distance.

It is also said that the maiden guards the treasures below the castle, which the robber knights stored there. According to reports, if evil should ever leave this world, she will distribute the gold among the people.
