Composer Spohr, Friedrich
Additional info/contents The march "Gruß an Kiel" (Army March II, 158 and Army March II, 130) was composed in 1864 by the Saxon military musician Friedrich Spohr (1830-1896). In the course of the German-Danish war, Saxony had also moved a contingent to the north to take part in the fighting. When these troops moved into the city of Kiel, the march was performed publicly for the first time.

Because of its title, 'Gruß an Kiel' later quickly became a popular naval march, especially when the massive expansion of the German fleet began in 1890 under Kaiser Wilhelm II. In its role as the figurehead of the German Navy, the march has become internationally known. In Germany it is often played as a greeting to incoming or outgoing warships. Gruß an Kiel' is a traditional march for the staff of Wehrbereichskommando I and Marineabschnittskommando Nord.

In Switzerland the march is also known as the 'Zofinger March' (named after the town of the same name in the canton of Aargau). One detail, however, makes the Zofinger March the same for locals: in a real Zofinger March, in contrast to the Salute to Kiel, additional tambours are used.
