Additional info/contents Here Jean Daetwyler describes the hurdles that a Russian army under General Suworow had to overcome in 1799. They had to cross the Alps. The result was an energetic and colourful work.
At the beginning the character of Suvorov is shown by a unanimous theme, carried by the low instruments.
The next theme illustrates very clearly the difficulties and hurdles that the Alps present for the army. This is done through extremely choppy and tormenting rhythms and rapidly changing time changes.
This is followed by the middle section. It is based on an Allegro in 6/8 time, which evokes the idea of a fast horse ride. It also describes the impatience and courage to measure oneself against the enemy and to beat him.
The central image, however, shows Suvorov lost in thoughts of his distant homeland.

Suvorov's plan was to advance his army of about 21,000 men by a surprise advance across the Alps into the rear of General André Masséna's troops and, together with Alexander Rimsky-Korsakov's troops and an Austrian army under General Hotze, to heckle him near Zurich. Although the Russians had never fought in the mountains before, they captured the Gotthard Pass from the French on 24 September, whereupon they passed through the Schöllenenschlucht under French fire. Arriving in Altdorf, Suvorov realised that a road to Schwyz along Lake Lucerne, which he had counted on according to the military maps provided to him by the Austrians, did not exist at all. The road ended in Altdorf at that time.

Suvorov decided on a daring manoeuvre over the Kinzig Pass (Chinzig Chulm) into the Muota Valley. Although his army was already very exhausted by this time, it faithfully obeyed his orders. The Muota Valley was reached on 27 September. There news reached Suvorov that on 25 and 26 September Rimsky-Korsakov and Hotze had been crushed by Massena in the Second Battle of Zurich. Suddenly he and his army went from being the hunter to the hunted, and on top of that they were trapped in the Muota Valley. However, after defeating Massena in the Battle of the Muota Valley on 1 October, Suvorov managed to break out over the Pragel Pass to Glarus, from where the Russian army broke away over the Panixer Pass into the Grisons and then marched over the St. Luzisteig towards Austria.
