Ferrer Ferran composed this work at the request of the organising committee of the International Competition for Wind Band Villa de Altea 2005 (Spain) as a compulsory piece in the category "Sinfónica". El Ingenioso Hidalgo (The Ingenious Hidalgo) was awarded the first prize of the International Composition Competition for Wind Orchestra "Romualdo Marenco" 2005 in Novi Ligure, Italy. The composition is dedicated to Luis Morote, a passionate advocate and enthusiast of music for wind orchestra.

Don Quixote de la Mancha, Cervantes' masterpiece, is one of the most fascinating creations of the human mind: a perfect caricature of the novel's subject matter and the romance of chivalry. The two main characters, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, represent two sides of the Spanish soul: one is an idealistic dreamer who forgets vital material goods and pursues unrealisable dreams, the other is a pragmatic and sensible character. After the Spanish suite En un Lugar de la Mancha and El Quijote, a symphonic fantasia for wind orchestra and narrator [with excerpts from the adventures and misadventures of the Knight of the Sorrowful Countenance], the three symphonic sketches El Ingenioso Hidalgo (The Clever Hidalgo) are the last work in the trilogy about Don Quijote. Rich in sublime melodies and generous rhythms, this great symphony illustrates three episodes of the literary model.I. De Alonso Quijano a Don Quijote de la Mancha (From Alonso Quijano to Don Quijote de la Mancha)II. El Encantamiento de Dulcinea (The Enchantment of Dulcinea)III. Historias de Caballería (Tales of Chivalry)Alonso Quijano has a passion for chivalric novels. After reading more than enough, the unfortunate man can no longer distinguish between reality and his fantasy. He decides to make the ideals of the travelling knights his own under the name Don Quixote de la Mancha.
