Programme notes *: Plato tells a story in which the cave inhabitants are deprived of the knowledge of the light outside. In the first sentence, Escape from Plato's Cave, the people of the underworld are visited by a man from the light. He tells them of a wondrous world outside. Some cave dwellers fight against the interested listeners and use chains to lock them in the shadow of the cave forever. His message is heard, some accept the challenge of escape and finally emerge from the shadowy underworld through honorable battles and dark paths... into the light! The moment I had reached that fleeting moment in the third movement, the transcendence from "D "ark to "G "od, the phone rang. Father Peter Rinaldi had died. As a boy I often ran to him during the interval and celebrated Holy Mass with him every day of the summer. He taught me to bring a message of love to people through deeds. One day he literally gave me his last shirt, no show, no lesson, just love. His whole life was in dedication to something higher... a prayer to that which makes him humble. I dedicated my teen novel Only for Now to him, and his name was the main character. Subconsciously I quoted the nine-movement wind ensemble suite, my first piece inspired by this book. Now Father Rinaldi... has gone into the light. He didn't want me to dedicate anything to him. His eyes were always looking up... ...beyond himself. But for him, another man out of the light...
