"West Side Story" by Leonard Bernstein and the "Symphonic Dances" arranged for wind orchestra by Paul Lavender

"West Side Story" is a musical work composed by Leonard Bernstein and premiered in 1957. The musical, whose book was written by Arthur Laurents and whose lyrics were written by Stephen Sondheim, is loosely based on William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet". It tells the tragic love story of Tony and Maria, two young people from rival ethnic groups in 1950s New York. The "Symphonic Dances from West Side Story" are a suite from the musical, compiled by Bernstein himself, and contains important musical themes and scenes from the work. Paul Lavender arranged this suite for wind orchestra, thus enabling the music to be performed in a new context.

"West Side Story" was first performed on Broadway in 1957 and was an immediate success. The musical combines elements of classical music, jazz and Latin American music, making it a milestone in the history of the American musical. The production, directed by Jerome Robbins, who also developed the choreography, was innovative and powerful. The musical's themes - racism, violence and young love - were groundbreaking in their time and remain relevant today.

The musical was adapted as a film in 1961, which also enjoyed great success and won numerous awards, including ten Oscars. Bernstein's music, particularly pieces such as "Maria", "Tonight" and "America", have become classics and are still often performed today.

The "Symphonic Dances from West Side Story" were compiled by Leonard Bernstein in 1960. This suite contains nine movements that summarize the musical's key musical and dramatic moments:
- Prologue: Introduces the rival gangs, the Jets and the Sharks.
- Somewhere: A dreamy piece that expresses a longing for a peaceful place.
- Scherzo: A happy and light piece that represents the hope and dreams of the youth.
- Mambo: An energetic dance piece that reflects Latin American music.
- Cha-Cha: Another Latin American dance used in the dance scene of the musical.
- Meeting Scene: The scene where Tony and Maria meet for the first time.
- Cool Fugue: A complex, jazzy piece that represents the tensions between the gangs.
- Rumble: The dramatic fight scene between the gangs.
- Finale: An emotional closing piece that sums up the tragedy of Tony and Maria.

The arrangement for wind orchestra by Paul Lavender

Lavender has skillfully used the various instrument groups of the wind orchestra to preserve the suite's varied timbres and dynamics. The energy of the "Mambo," the intimacy of "Somewhere," and the drama of the "Rumble" come alive in the wind orchestra version, providing a thrilling experience for both musicians and audience.

"West Side Story" by Leonard Bernstein is a timeless work that has had a lasting influence on musical theater through its music, themes, and staging.
