The 9th variation "Nimrod" is dedicated to August Jaeger, a close friend and patron of Elgar. With its at the same time restrained and sonorous character, the mood of the piece corresponds to the request of the Requiem text. Wide melodic leaps in all voices produce a pleading tone.
