Programme notes *: additional text

Mozart's music has little to do with the special sound of a large wind orchestra. There are some pieces by him that would allow a trasnscription, but these are not characteristic of Mozart.
So there is nothing else to do but to take a theme from Mozart and vary it? Max Reger and many others have done that successfully. But since the year 1991 was just around the corner and the sellout, inflation and so much abuse had already begun, a conscientious music lover can only exercise extreme restraint.
I therefore decided to take a third option in order to be able to record a suggestion of the Austrian Brass Band Association to write something for the 200th anniversary of Mozart's death: I did not write an arrangement and I did not invent variations on a melody that could not become more beautiful. I read biographies and letters and then musically depicted four scenes from his life. Only once did I "undermine" a quotation, all other music is by me, does not sound like Mozart, although in some places "historical reminiscences" cannot be denied.
Program music then? Yes. The titles of the movements indicate the direction. The "programme", however, is something that players and listeners have to decide for themselves.

1st movement: "On the road"
Mozart's life began six years ago in the "post-chaise", which took him to many European countries. Horns, horse clatter, rural scenes accompanied his life, wanderlust and homesickness at the same time.

2nd movement: "Write to the Bäsle"
Mozart's base Maria Anna Thekla lived in Augsburg. He visited her. He 21, she 19, both "also a little bad" (letter from Augsburg, 17 October 1777). Wolfgang Amadé's letters to this Bäsle are language games "allegro assai".

3rd sentence: Walk slowly across the Old Market
Wolfgang Amadé was - as his music testifies - not only the constantly cheerful, fun-loving darling of the family and the high lordships. One can imagine that he walked full of thoughts, full of musical ideas, across Salzburg's Old Market Square late in the evening.

Fourth movement: "It happened in the ante chambre..."
In 1781 a quarrel with his employer, the Salzburg Prince Archbishop Hieronymus Count Colloredo, broke out in Vienna. It happened in the antechamber, in the "ante chambre", when Wolfgang Amadé wanted to hand over a new petition. The Colonel's kitchen master, Count Karl Arco, dared "to throw around with boors and purses, to throw one out at the door through a kick in the ass" (letter from Vienna, 9 June 1781).
