Composer Rossini, Gioacchino
Arranger Suppan, Armin
Difficulty level 5
Additional info/contents The overture is in the form of a four-part tone poem. In the lyrical introduction, five solo violoncellists present themselves in an original way, supported by the tutti violoncellos and double basses: In this passage, Rossini describes young Arnold's love for Matilda, the sister of the Habsburg tyrant. This scene is interrupted twice by the ominous roll of thunder from the timpani. Then the storm breaks out, combining the natural phenomenon of a thunderstorm in the mountains with the anger of the Swiss people. Calm returns after the storm. Now the famous ‘cow row melody’ resounds in the cor anglais, with an echo and the twittering of birds in the flute: both a blessing and magical protection for the Alps. The trumpet's call, which finally leads into the ‘March of the Swiss to Freedom’, crashes into this ideal world.

This version is not intended to misjudge the wind orchestra as an ‘orchestra without strings’, as a substitute orchestra - but to present it in its own right and with its own sound possibilities. The violin melodies of the original score are therefore not automatically transferred to the clarinets, but instead wind-specific solutions are always sought for ways to make the original sound new and yet appropriate.
The lyrical opening section, originally scored with five solo cellos and tutti cellos with double bass, is scored with clarinets and bassoons in this instrumentation. The first solo part (clarinet Ia) should, if available, be played by an alto clarinet (part is enclosed), as the position is much more favourable. For the traditional cor anglais solo in ‘Kuhreihen’ there are not only parts for oboe, soprano saxophone, clarinet, alto saxophone and alto clarinet, but also a part in A for the oboe d'amore, as this instrument is particularly suited to the idyllic mood of this part.

For a good interpretation of this work, not only oboes and bassoons should be used, but also all clarinets, with E-flat, alto, bass and contrabass (contra-alto) clarinets. However, the following instruments are less important: E flat trumpet, piston E flat, soprano saxophone I/II, tenor horn II, as they are only used as doublers. These parts are only included for reasons of compatibility, as are the cue notes.
