Composer Vlak, Kees
Difficulty level 4
Duration 15:12
Additional info/contents Kees Vlak found the inspiration for this romantic work during his stay in Freiburg, where he attended a music festival. At this festival he received a prize for one of his compositions, which was played by several bands from different countries. The composer lived in the small village of Horben, hidden between pine forests on a mountain on the edge of the Black Forest. From the balcony of his room he had a magnificent view of the "Schauinslandtal", barely obscured by the tops of the huge pines. Every morning he was woken up by a blackbird singing in a huge pine tree next to his window. This bird song opens the composition. Whenever possible, the composer and his wife took walks in the Black Forest. The rediscovery of this wonderful area is expressed by the ever-increasing number of timbres used in the orchestration. Each village still has its own folk music and dances. Over a hundred bands played everywhere; the Black Forest seemed to be the scene of one huge festival.

The image of the Black Forest is also linked to that of hunting scenes, so the next theme is introduced by hunting horn themes. The second theme paints the Titisee. At first the lake is very calm, but a stiff breeze sets both water and music in motion. The small town of Titisee is very popular with tourists and is famous for its woodcutting, clockworks and music boxes. It is a popular folk tune played by a music box that provides the link to the next theme. The joy and cheerfulness of the dancing villagers is expressed through a movement that elaborates the initial theme. Leaving the small town one can once again hear the hunting music from the forest as well as the song of the birds. The new theme is again closely linked to hunting and is played by the typical German helicon-like euphoniums. This theme interacts with the second theme and the word ends with a grand finale intended as a musical tribute to this wonderful area.
