Additional info/contents In his four-movement suite Songs from the East End (Songs from the Eastern Angle), Pavel Stanék draws on folk songs from his Bohemian-Moravian homeland to assemble them into a larger tone painting in an independent manner. Stanék's tendency towards opulent harmonies, which lends the music a voluptuous and full-bodied character, benefits the work. Delicate chamber-musical passages and large orchestral tutti give the individual movements lightness and tension. In the first two movements he adheres more or less to the stanzaic outline of the songs. The third and fourth movements, on the other hand, are already a fantasy for the folk songs, rich in motifs, using less common harmonic twists and turns and with colourfully changing orchestral colours.

1st movement: Appasionato
The dynamic 3/4 or 6/8 time full of passion and eastern temperament opens the suite. In between there is a small, calmer part, with solo interludes in the high woodwinds.

2nd movement: Moderato maestoso
Lively, but calm and soulful melodies through the different registers, differentiated dynamics and devout singing at the end, make this movement very touching.

3rd movement: Andante sostenuto
Numerous changes in time and unusual harmony quickly make it clear that Stanék is moving away from traditional workmanship in this movement. Nevertheless, the Bohemian-Moravian pathos clearly resounds.

4th movement: Vivace
The cheerful, swinging Vivace combines traditional with modern sound language and ends the 'Songs from the East End'.

With "Songs from the East End", Pavel Stanek, a renowned contemporary composer, has created a work that draws on the cultural diversity of his Bohemian-Moravian homeland and shapes it into an impressive sound painting characterized by Stanék's lush harmonies and skillful instrumentation.

The first movement, "Appassionato", opens the suite with a dynamic 3/4 or 6/8 time signature, characterized by passion and Eastern temperament. Between these lively passages there are quieter sections with solo interludes in the high woodwinds, which give the piece a complex dynamic.

In the second movement, "Moderato maestoso", Stanek leads lively yet calm melodies through various registers, incorporating nuanced dynamics and reverent singing at the end of the movement. The emotional depth and feeling that this sentence conveys makes it particularly touching.

The third movement, "Andante sostenuto", is characterized by numerous time changes and unusual harmonies, which testify to Stanék's deviation from the traditional processing of folk songs. Nevertheless, the Bohemian-Moravian pathos remains clearly recognizable and gives the movement a deep emotional resonance.

The fourth and final movement, "Vivace", is cheerful and lively, merging traditional and modern sound languages. This movement rounds off the suite with liveliness and energy and forms a successful conclusion to the "Songs from the East End".

Overall, Pavel Stanek's suite "Songs from the East End" shows an imaginative processing of folk songs from his homeland, which represent a fascinating musical journey with their rich harmony, differentiated dynamics and complex instrumentation.
