Additional info/contents The work "Singapura Suite" was commissioned by the 'Singapore's Ministry of Education Extracurricular Activities Branch' as one of the compulsory pieces for the 'Singapore Youth Festival' 1999.

"Singapura" - that is the Malay name of the inhabitants of "Singapore", it is the language of the natives. Because "Singapura"" is one of the most important ports in the world, this two-part work opens with a sailor dance. An authentic melody, "Chan Mali Chan", is woven into the middle section of this first part, whose A-B-A form is made clear by the repetition of the sailor dance in a slightly altered form.
"Singapore's" is also a dynamic and lively city-state, and therefore the second part begins with a fitting dance, a fast bourrée. As a contrast, a second authentic melody is heard, "Dayung Sampan", a very light, serene sailor song. This short but curious suite ends very exuberantly with a repetition of the beginning.
The suite is a rollicking, cheerful work originally composed as a compulsory piece for the Singapore Youth Festival.

Singapore, the city-state at the tip of the Malay Peninsula, has a fascinating history and is today an important centre for trade and culture. Singapore's origins date back to the 14th century, when it was an important trading post. In the 19th century, Singapore became a British colony, which further increased its economic importance. Over the years, Singapore has developed into a melting pot of different cultures, including Malay, Chinese, Indian and European influences. Singapore's geographical location has cemented its role as a major harbour in the world. Singapore's harbour is one of the busiest in the world and plays a central role in international trade. Singapore's maritime history, characterised by seafaring and trade, is also reflected in the country's culture and identity.

The "Singapura Suite" by Belgian composer Jan van der Roost is a sonic homage to Singapore, reflecting the city's maritime roots and vibrant atmosphere. The work consists of two parts, which are linked by authentic melodies and traditional dances.

The first part opens with a sailor's dance that emphasises the country's maritime connections. The A-B-A form is completed by the skilful integration of the melody "Chan Mali Chan", which forms the middle section of the first part. The repetition of the sailor's dance in a modified form concludes the first part and lends the work an organic structure.

The second part of the suite begins with a fast bourrée, which represents the dynamism and liveliness of Singapore. This is contrasted by the melody "Dayung Sampan", a light and relaxed sailor's song. The variety of musical elements reflects the cultural diversity of Singapore.

The suite concludes exuberantly with a repetition of the opening, which not only rounds off the musical work, but also captures the energy and joy of the vibrant city of Singapore. Overall, the "Singapura Suite" skilfully interweaves historical and cultural elements of Singapore with musical creativity, creating an impressive artistic work that reflects the uniqueness and vibrancy of this fascinating city.
