Additional info/contents Above the Danube valley, on a wooded hill marked by the famous Danube Grottoes, carefully protected by a massive surrounding wall, lies the Inzigkofen women's monastery, founded in 1354, whose hermits have followed the order's rule of Saint Augustine since 1394. Initially a simple hermitage, the existing buildings were expanded in the years around 1660 and the monastery was built in its current picturesque form. In the fateful history of the Inzigkofen monastery, which always maintained close relations with the Hohenzollern princely house, the name of Princess Amalie Zephyrine appears again and again. A stranger who inquires about the origin of this name often comes across the widespread story that the rich Princess Amalie threw herself from this enormous rock into the dark waters of the Danube when she was young because of lovesickness.

The harmonically compressed harshness and the simple melody of the introductory main theme correspond to the captivating image of the stone Amaliendenkmal in its massive projection. The organ-like interlude of bars 14-37 recalls the princess's piety and noble goodness of heart. The last part, bar 77, brings the melodically faithful concluding theme of the introduction once again, with a metronomic change. The ring only closes after a great increase from the pianissimo to the fortissimo of the final fermata.
