Two melodic ideas—a festive dance, and a slower, reverent melody—set the structure for this ebullient piece for intermediate bands. Programme notes *: No Greater Joy was commissioned by the 2018 Princeton High School Symphonic Winds, Jim Baxter, Director. The piece is inspired by and dedicated to Princeton alumnus and music educator: Carol Fillafer. For over fifty years, Ms. Fillafer has been making music in the city of Princeton, Minnesota both as a student and an educator. The number of lives changed and hearts touched are countless, and the impression she has made on the community through her love of the arts will last forever. This work aims to serve as a celebration of her impressive tenure and seeks to capture her joyful character, her positive nature, her infectious spirit, her commitment to her students, and her unyielding passion. After an opening fanfare, the piece revolves around two melodic ideas. The first is a festive, dance-like melody that is ceaselessly ebullient. This frolicking and cheerful levity travels through the ensemble, allowing everyone to take part in the celebration. The dance gives way to the second theme, a slower, reverent melody - the deepest appreciation of a grateful community. This melody is based on the three descending pitches “mi-re-do”, which are use no less than nine times in one statement of the theme. Having taught beginning band for so many years, this “mi-re-do” refrain is all too familiar to Ms. Fillafer as they are the first three notes a student often learns. As this section of the work peaks, a subtle reference to the school’s alma mater is used in the counter-melody acknowledging her lifetime commitment to music in her district. The dance melody returns and builds to a climax that partners the two melodies, now in the key of Bb. Here, the joyful dance is bolstered by the strength of the second theme, which now literally sounds the first three notes she has taught for decades: D, C, and Bb.
