Additional info/contents People settled and founded a village in a vast, wooded country. But predatory tribes and the natural force of the sea posed a constant threat to the growing settlement. Over the course of history, the village had to be rebuilt again and again, but the residents were not discouraged. The “New Village” was created with magnificent houses, schools and churches. Prosperity and a rich community life developed. The past faded. Only festivals and fairs, which were often lively, reminded us of the distant old days. It was therefore no coincidence that the composer used the same musical theme to represent the turbulent times of the past and the atmosphere of the fairs.

The composition “The New Village” was commissioned by the Province of North Holland for the 15th Niedorp Festival and was premiered on November 27, 1993.

The composition "The New Village" by Kees Vlak is a fascinating musical work that captures and sonically represents the history of a village over the centuries. This musical journey takes listeners through the different eras and events that have shaped the development of the village, from its prehistoric past to the present.

Originally, thousands of years ago, the area where the "New Village" now stands was underwater, an extensive lagoon. The land was gradually lifted out of the sea by deposits of animal and plant sediments, but the threat of the waves remained. Deep forests were later established in this region, resulting in the area becoming known as "Woodland".

The early settlers discovered the fertility of this land and founded their villages there. But rapacious tribes also moved into this rich area and brought destruction and looting to the villages. Despite the threat from the sea and enemy attacks, the residents always managed to rebuild their communities - the origin of the "New Village".

Over time, the “New Village” prospered. New houses, schools, churches and an active community life were built. The threat of the sea and predatory gangs was finally a thing of the past. Today only festivals and fairs remind us of the lively events of bygone times.

The composition "The New Village" reflects these historical events and developments in an impressive way. The musical motifs, the marauding hordes of the past and the lively atmosphere of today's fairs are interconnected and reflect the complexity of the village's history.

Kees Vlak manages to weave the past and present of the village together through his musical design and offers listeners an emotional and sonic journey through history. "The New Village" is not only a musical work, but also a captivating experience that celebrates the diversity and resilience of a village community across the centuries.
