The first movement, “El Butaquito,” is based on a very lively folk song of the same name and is characterized by its many contrasting rhythms.
The second movement, “Romance Mejicano,” creates a peaceful and romantic atmosphere.
The title of the third movement, “Ballaviejo,” means “Ancient Dance,” with the word “ancient” referring to the rhythms brought to the Americas by the black population of Africa.

Mexico is a country rich in cultural traditions, and its folk music and dances are living testaments to this diversity. Mexican folk music and dance styles reflect the country's history, geographic diversity and cultural mix. From the passionate rhythms of the Mariachi to the festive sounds of the Son Jarocho and the energetic dances of the Jarabe Tapatío, they offer a fascinating insight into Mexico's cultural heritage.

Mariachi is arguably the most well-known form of Mexican folk music. It has its roots in the 18th century in the western state of Jalisco and has since become a symbol of Mexican culture. Typical instruments in a Mariachi ensemble are violins, trumpets, guitars, vihuelas and guitarróns. Mariachi music is known for its lively rhythms, emotional chants and colorful performances. The songs are often about love, patriotism and rural life.

Ranchera music originated in the 19th century and is closely related to the mariachi style. It is a form of music inspired by the traditions and life of the countryside. Ranchera songs often deal with themes such as love, nature, home and honor. The music is melodic and is typically accompanied by a guitar and sometimes a mariachi ensemble.

Son Jarocho originates from the Veracruz region and is a fusion of Spanish, African and indigenous musical influences. Characteristic instruments include the jarana (a small guitar), the requinto (a slightly larger guitar) and the harp. The music is rhythmic and often improvised, with lively, danceable rhythms. The most famous song in this genre is "La Bamba".

Norteño music comes from northern Mexico and is heavily influenced by the polka and waltz-like music of European immigrants. The main instruments are the accordion and the bajo sexto (a Mexican 12-string guitar). Norteño music is energetic and danceable, often with stories of everyday life, love and social issues.

Banda is a style of music and dance from the state of Sinaloa that is characterized by the use of wind instruments. Banda music is loud and rhythmic, often with trumpets, tubas and drums. The dance is energetic and festive, typically in pairs, with lots of turns and fast movements.

The folk music and dance styles of Mexico are deeply rooted in the country's history and culture. They represent a mixture of indigenous, Spanish and African influences and offer a colorful and lively picture of Mexican identity. Whether through the passionate sounds of the Mariachi, the lively rhythms of the Son Jarocho or the energetic dances of the Jarabe Tapatío - Mexican folk music and its dance styles are an expression of the joie de vivre and cultural richness of this fascinating country.
