The composition "Masquerade (Festival of Masks)" by Hermann X. Egner is a fascinating suite for wind orchestra that was originally conceived as ballet music. The work consists of five movements, each depicting a unique scene or image. Although it can be performed as a suite without dance performance, it offers listeners a vivid imagination and invites them to enter the world of masquerade and theater.

1st movement: "Dance of the Robots": The first movement opens the piece with an impressive scene: The robots enter the stage and begin their strange dance, which is characterized by angular movements and unusual rhythms. The music supports the mechanical movements of the robots and creates a surreal atmosphere. An invisible bird, personified by the music, initially unsettles the robots, but they continue their dance and then search for it again.

2nd movement: "Entrance of the beautiful princess and her entourage": The second movement presents a majestic waltz that accompanies the appearance of the beautiful princess and her magnificent entourage. The princess enters the stage with graceful movements, followed by a cheerful company of ladies and gentlemen. The music gives the scene a regal aura, inviting listeners to join the elegant dance of the princess and her entourage.

3rd movement: "Dance of the Magician": In the third movement, the stage is dominated by a mysterious magician who captivates the audience with his impressive appearance and his magical movements. The music, carried by the sounds of the tam-tam, accompanies the magician in his incantations and wild dance movements that seem to transcend the boundaries of reality.

4th movement: "Pierrot and Pierrette": The fourth movement brings an atmosphere of clowning and fun to the stage. Pierrot and Pierrette, two classic characters of the theater, perform their comic and entertaining performances, accompanied by cheerful and playful music. The scene sparkles with life and energy as the two clowns make the audience laugh with their humorous actions.

5th movement: "Finale": The finale of the piece concludes the masquerade with a solemn departure of all mask wearers. The music underlines the celebratory mood and gives the characters a dignified farewell as they leave the stage and the festival slowly draws to a close.

Overall, "Masquerade (Festival of Masks)" by Hermann X. Egner offers a fascinating and colorful journey through a world full of magic, elegance and fun. The suite invites listeners to be enchanted by the vivid scenes and stirring melodies and to experience the atmosphere of a masked celebration.
