Additional info/contents "Ida Rides Ice Skates" is a work in contemporary musical language with many effects. The "mysterious" beginning in slow basic tempo by harp (obbligato) and trombone glissandi in dialogue with alto saxophone glissandi is followed by a fast "swing" part (2/2 bar) with E-flat clarinet solo, followed by "improvising" baritone saxophone solo. The quarter accompaniment ("walking bass") by percussion and double bass with alternating low brass. The following section (Allegro molto) is characterized by rapid sixteenths in all registers and leads back to the slow basic tempo of the beginning. An exposed cadenza-like piccolo solo is accompanied by harp and double bass. After the music from the beginning ("Mysterious") sounds once again, a very slow and sustained part follows with long note values which begins quietly, increases dynamically and discharges in an outburst. After a short "pause", it continues in a virtuoso dance with solo piccolo, flutes, oboes and cor anglais. A counterline in contrabassoon and bass clarinet is accompanied by pizzicato quarters (2nd euphonium, tuba, contrabass) and harp. This is followed by an intensification by expanding the sound with clarinets, then saxophones until powerful orchestral chords lead to the fast-paced, dramatic final section. The work is set very chamber-musically and soloistically (also contrabassoon, cor anglais) with the most varied combinations. The exposed E-flat clarinet part is particularly noteworthy in terms of instrumentation. Harp and tubular bells are also obligatory.

The "ice skate" in music and the composition "Ida fährt Schlittschuh" by Johannes Stert

The term "ice skate" in music evokes images of gliding movements and elegant figures on the ice. Musical compositions that take up the theme of ice skating often attempt to translate these visual and physical impressions into sound. Johannes Stert, a renowned contemporary composer, has taken up this theme in his composition "Ida fährt Schlittschuh" for top level wind orchestra. Subtitled "A Dream", this work reflects the lightness, joy and sometimes drama of ice skating.

Musically, ice skating is often depicted through flowing melodic lines, gentle rhythms and harmonic changes that imitate the gliding movements on the ice. Well-known works such as Emile Waldteufel's "The Skaters" (Les Patineurs) or Antonio Vivaldi's "Winter" Suite, especially in the 2nd movement, capture these flowing movements musically. Orchestral means are often used to illustrate the various aspects of ice skating, such as gliding, turning and jumping, in sound.

"Ida fährt Schlittschuh" by Johannes Stert

Johannes Stert's composition "Ida fährt Schlittschuh", subtitled "A Dream", is a demanding work for top-level wind orchestra. This composition represents a musical narrative that describes the dreamy yet vivid experience of ice skating.

The composition begins with a gentle, dreamy introduction that introduces the listener to Ida's world. The music is delicate and lyrical, with a touch of melancholy that captures the quiet beauty of a snowy winter day. The main theme, introduced by the woodwinds, is light and playful, like the first cautious steps on the ice.

Stert develops the theme further by including different groups of instruments in the dialogue. The music gains dynamism and complexity as Ida becomes more confident on the ice. Fast runs in the flutes and clarinets symbolize the gliding and turning movements, while bold chords in the brass represent the powerful and graceful leaps.

The climax of the composition reaches a more virtuoso passage that challenges the technical skills of the orchestra. Rapid changes between different tempos and rhythms reflect the fast, exciting movements of Ida on the ice. The percussion provides additional accents, acoustically representing the clinking of the blades and the excitement of skating.

The conclusion of the composition returns to a calmer and reflective tone, emphasizing the dreamy character of the work. Ida gradually slides off the ice, and the music ends gently, much like it began, with delicate woodwind sounds and a soothing change of harmony. The dream ends, and listeners are gently guided back to reality.

"Ida fährt Schlittschuh" is an outstanding work in wind orchestra literature, translating the poetic imagination of ice skating into music. Stert's composition challenges the musicians both technically and interpretively, offering the audience a rich and captivating listening experience. The work is known for its colorful orchestration and its ability to create vivid images and emotions.

Johannes Stert's "Ida fährt Schlittschuh" is a masterful example of how an everyday subject such as ice skating can be transformed into a profound musical narrative. The composition combines technical virtuosity with emotional depth, offering both the performers and the listeners a unique and moving musical journey. This work is a valuable contribution to modern wind orchestra literature and shows the creative power and inventiveness of Johannes Stert.
