Difficulty level 5
Evaluation level of countries C5 (Swiss highest class); D6 (German highest class)
Duration 21:40
Additional info/contents Following a year of studying Mexican folk music, Reed created this work which is subtitled A Mexican Folk Song Symphony for Concert Band. Set in three contrasting movements, the entire work musically portrays a religious festival. The variety of textures is evident from the beginning of the first movement entitled 'Prelude and Aztec Dance.' The second movement, 'Mass,' is more somber and reflective. 'Carnival,' the last movement, is joyous and invigorating. A hearty time-honored work.

The religious festival of the veneration of the Virgin Mary in Mexico and H. Owen Reed's "La Fiesta Mexicana"

In Mexico, the veneration of the Virgin Mary, especially in her appearance as Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, occupies a central place in the religious and cultural life of the country. This deep-rooted tradition is reflected not only in the piety and rituals of the Mexican population, but also in art. With his composition La Fiesta Mexicana for top-level wind orchestra, H. Owen Reed has created a musical work that impressively expresses this unique festival and the associated contrasts between spirituality, solemnity and worldly exuberance.

The Mexican fiesta in honor of the Virgin Mary is a multifaceted event that is deeply rooted in the religious beliefs and social structure of the country. It is a festival characterized by a remarkable range of contrasts: devotion and exuberance, piety and paganism, seriousness and humor merge in this special celebration. This diversity is taken up thematically in H. Owen Reed's composition and translated into music in three movements.

1. Prelude and Aztec Dance
The first movement opens the work with a depiction of the festive beginning. The church bells and the explosion of fireworks announce that the fiesta is beginning, symbolizing the fusion of Catholic liturgy and traditional customs. Believers make a pilgrimage to the cathedral, often in deep humility, some even on their knees, to express their devotion to the Virgin Mary. Aztecs appear in a parade, adorned with masks and flowers, performing their ritual dances. This part of the fiesta refers to the indigenous culture of Mexico and shows how these pre-Christian traditions were incorporated into the Catholic devotion to the Virgin Mary. The music in this movement is rhythmic, dramatic and full of energy, reflecting the dynamism and passion of the beginning of the festival.

2. Mass
After the exuberant hustle and bustle of the first movement, the second movement is calm and contemplative. The mass on the hill is the spiritual climax of the festival. Here, people from all social classes gather in the cathedral to commemorate the Virgin Mary. The bells call on the faithful to prayer, and the music changes to a sacred, solemn sound language. Reed uses choral motifs and simple harmonies that underline the atmosphere of reverence and inner contemplation. This musical representation reminds us that the festival is ultimately a religious celebration in honor of the Mother of God, who is revered as the protector and bearer of hope for the Mexicans.

3. Carnival
With the third movement, Reed takes the listeners into the exuberant hustle and bustle of the carnival, which is also a central part of the fiesta. After the solemn mass, a colorful, lively atmosphere breaks out: markets, traveling circuses and bullfights as well as the music of the mariachi bands fill the streets. Carnival reflects the exuberant joy of life and the passionate character of Mexican culture. The music uses colorful melodies and rousing rhythms that make the pulsating heartbeat of the fiesta audible. The movement ends in an ecstatic climax that represents the festival in all its splendor and energy.

La Fiesta Mexicana is more than just a musical description of a festival - it is a tribute to the cultural and religious identity of Mexico. H. Owen Reed captures the complex facets of the veneration of the Virgin Mary in his composition: from the silent devotion to the ecstatic dances of the Aztecs to the joy of life of the carnival. The work reminds us how deeply religion, tradition and culture are intertwined and brings the diversity and richness of the Mexican fiesta to life for listeners all over the world.
