Additional info/contents The beaches of Rio de Janeiro are world-famous; the same goes for Brazilian music which is equally famous, because of its individual character. Many composers drew their inspiration from these Latin-American sounds; one of them was the Dutch composer Malando. The population is a mixture of many races: whites, blacks and the original Amerindians. The specific talents of these groups have blended into what is known as Brazilian music: the melodic intervals of the original population, the rhythm of the black group and the chords and structures of the white race. This mixture not only created very beautiful music, it also produced very beautiful people. All this can be traced on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. Especially during the "Carnaval de Rio" the festivities seem to have no end. The composer named the three movements after these famous beaches in Rio: Trocadero, Ipanema and Copacabana.

The composition for wind orchestra "Las Playas de Rio" by Kees Vlak takes the listener on a fascinating journey through the pulsating beaches of Rio de Janeiro. With three different parts, this musical work offers a multi-layered representation of beach life and culture on the Brazilian coast.

The first part, "Trocadero-Playa", opens the composition with a haunting introduction reminiscent of the Native Americans. A passing tribe led by an Aztec chief is depicted. Beach life slowly awakens and listeners are transported to a scene full of energy and anticipation. With finger snapping, drum rhythms and saxophone sounds, the atmosphere of a lively street café is captured and the festival begins in full swing.

The second part, "Ipanema-Playa", presents itself in the Bossanova rhythm and is characterized by typically Brazilian chords that are laced with a certain melancholy. The main melody tells of deserted beaches and lost lovers. The atmosphere is characterized by a mix of melancholy and beauty that captures the essence of the coast.

Finally, the third part, "Copacabana Playa", takes us into the nightly hustle and bustle on Copacabana Beach. The carnival is in full swing and people are dancing samba until they drop. The sounds of the fireworks mingle with the rhythmic beats of the bands as exuberance and joy fill the air. It's a captivating depiction of night on the beach, where the vibrancy and energy of Rio de Janeiro is experienced in all its glory.

"Las Playas de Rio" is not only a musical composition, but also an artistic tribute to the beauty, culture and vibrancy of the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. Through powerful sounds and lively rhythms, Kees Vlak takes us into a world full of colors, emotions and joy of life, capturing the essence of the Brazilian coast and taking listeners on an unforgettable musical journey.
