Duration 7:30
Additional info/contents Kees Vlak dedicates the rhapsody "Israel Shalom" to the modern Israeli state. He uses folkloristic elements and creates a new piece of music.
The work begins with impressions from Purim which commemorates the deliverance of the Persian Jews by Esther. The happy atmosphere reminds us of carnival with street parades and colorful costumes. The music cannot deny essential influences from Eastern Europe, e.g. from Russia, Poland, Hungary and Bulgaria, but Gypsy and dance music is heard too.
Some 25,000 Bedouins in the Negev Desert still lead a nomad’s life. The solo theme played by the clarinet which opens the second part of the rhapsody alludes to the solitude and seclusion even that governs their lives.
This episode is followed by an elegy which stands for the meditations at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem.
The final fragment picks up the festive atmosphere of the first section leading towards a triumphant finale of the rhapsody.

Kees Vlak's composition "Israel - Shalom" is a fascinating musical work that captures the diversity and beauty of Israeli culture. By integrating various traditional songs, Vlak creates a sonic journey through Israel's rich musical landscape.

The composition opens with "Purim in Tel-Aviv," a lively and festive piece that captures the joyful atmosphere of this Jewish holiday. The use of lively rhythms, playful melodies and dynamic contrasts conveys the exuberant mood of the Purim celebrations.

The music then switches to "Ukrainer Khosidl," a piece that represents Israel's cultural diversity. The Khosidl is a traditional Jewish dance that is interpreted in different regions. Vlak captures the essence of this dancer with melodious phrases and stirring rhythms that reflect the diversity of the Jewish musical tradition.

"Hora" is another important part of Israeli music and is integrated into the composition by Vlak. The Hora is a traditional circle dance that embodies community and joy. The music of this section is characterized by catchy melodies and rhythmic elements that celebrate the spirit of community and dancing together.

The composition then takes a turn and is dedicated to the "Bedouins in the Negev." Here Vlak creates a musical representation of the nomadic lifestyle of the Bedouins in the Negev desert region. The sounds of the desert, the vastness of the horizon and the freedom of nomadic life are captured through the musical representation of the Bedouins.

The composition's climax reaches its most emotional level with "Jerusalem (Meditation at the Wailing-Wall)." This passage reflects the spiritual depth and historical significance of the city of Jerusalem. The meditative mood created by the sounds at the Western Wall gives the composition a poignant and thoughtful dimension.

Kees Vlak masterfully manages to fuse these different musical elements into a coherent yet diverse composition. The integration of Purim festivities, traditional dances such as Hora, the nomadic culture of the Bedouins and the spiritual atmosphere of Jerusalem demonstrates the breadth and depth of cultural diversity in Israel.
