Additional info/contents An Indian summer is a period of unseasonably warm, dry weather that sometimes occurs in autumn in Northern America during late September to November. In an article on the US National Weather Service's web site, weather historian William R. Deedler writes that Indian Summer can be defined as "any spell of warm, quiet, hazy weather that may occur in October or November." It is usually described as occurring after a killing frost.

The "Indian Summer Suite" by British composer Eric Ball is an impressive work for wind orchestra that captures the fascinating culture and spirituality of the North American natives. The suite consists of four movements, each of which tells its own musical story.

I. The first movement, "The Great Chief Speaks", opens the suite with majestic splendour. The powerful sounds of the wind instruments bring to life the authority and wisdom of a great tribal chief. The melodic lines reflect the tales and wisdom that the Great Chief imparts to his people. The music exudes an aura of dignity and respect, and Ball gives this opening an epic character.

II. In the second movement, "By the Cool Waters", Ball transports us to calm waters where the music creates a picturesque and relaxed atmosphere. Gentle melodies flow like a calm river, while the musical landscape is characterised by serenity and harmony. This movement serves as a contrasting moment in the suite, capturing the versatility of the indigenous people's natural environment.

III "Totem Dance", the third movement, brings a lively energy to the suite. The rhythmic textures and lively melodies reflect the rhythm of a ritual dance in which tribal members celebrate their connection to nature and their beliefs. The music takes the listener on a powerful and stirring journey that celebrates the vibrant culture of the indigenous people.

IV. The final movement, "Hymn to the Great Spirit", rounds off the suite by creating a solemn and spiritual atmosphere. Ball composes a poignant hymn that expresses the tribe's worship of the Great Spirit. The harmonic soundscapes and sublime melodies create a deep emotional impact and immerse the listener in the spiritual world of the Native North Americans.

Overall, Eric Ball's "Indian Summer Suite" is a masterful work that is not only musically sophisticated, but also captures a cultural narrative. Through the powerful combination of melody, rhythm and harmony, Ball succeeds in bringing the beauty and significance of Native American culture to life in this suite for wind band.
