Additional info/contents Dominik Ertl’s (1857-1911) “Hoch- und Deutschmeister-Marsch” (“Hoch- und Deutschmeister March”) have become the two best-known of the many marches dedicated to this regiment. Ertl was musically educated already as a young boy, and later continued his studies with, inter alia, Anton Bruckner. When he was seventeen, he worked as a music director in Vienna. He fulfilled his national service in the band of the Hoch- und Deutschmeister Regiment where he even was appointed regimental drum major. This was a position which must not be underrated, as he was the official representative of the regimental bandmaster. During that period he composed a number of pieces which mostly refer to the Hoch- und Deutschmeister Regiment. Following his time with that famous regiment, he toured several European countries with an orchestra of his own, and finally accepted an engagement in Dresden. He, however, eventually returned to Vienna where he was active until his death in several restaurants in which light music was performed.
