Additional info/contents	Both the composers of the musical 'Chess', Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, and the librettist Tim Rice had already built up a good career before they started this huge project. Andersson and Ulvaeus were the male half of the then popular Swedish group ABBA, and Tim Rice had already written the lyrics for Lloyd Webber's musicals 'Jesus Christ Superstar' and 'Evita'. The musical takes place in Merano in northern Italy. This is where the World Chess Championship is taking place. The main characters are the American title holder and his Russian challenger; both are opponents not only on a sporting but also on a political level. The topic is certainly no longer relevant today, because Chess was created in 1984 and the political situation was very different back then. Perhaps that is why Chess did not last as long as, for example, 'Les Misérables' or 'Cats'. The music of Chess, on the other hand, has certainly held up and songs like 'Last Night in Bangkok', 'I know him so well' and 'Anthem' are now part of the standard repertoire. The arranger Johan de Meij used the beautiful orchestral sections of the original music in this selection, which give this musical a symphonic character.
