Composer Mailman, Martin
Lyricist Shakespeare, William
Opus no. Op.80
Difficulty level 5
Duration 20:00
Additional info/contents A major contribution (and ABA/Ostwald composition winner) from this respected composer, these three movements are inspired (and titled after stanzas of) William Shakespeare's sonnets. Calling for harp, piano, and active mallet percussion, the work covers a wide gamut of stylings, from delicate hymn, to motivic fragments (over a bass marimba ostinato), to the soaring, ethereal beauty of a solo soprano vocalise (reminding one of incredible Ennio Morricone moments) rising above an exciting, loud conclusion. An ambitious work but not beyond the reach of advanced bands/wind ensembles.
