Programme notes *: additional text

The term "Hanseatic" is closely linked to the history, trade and cultural development of Europe. Originally derived from the Hanseatic League, a medieval trading organisation, the term has evolved over the centuries to symbolise a rich trading tradition and cultural identity. The Hanseatic League was an association of northern German cities that played a significant role in European trade in the Middle Ages, particularly in the 12th to 17th centuries. These cities formed a network that promoted the exchange of goods, ideas and cultural influences. The "Hanseatic League" contributed to the economic prosperity and cultural diversity of Northern and Eastern Europe.

The "Hanseatic" recalls an era of flourishing trade in which cities such as Lübeck, Hamburg and Bremen were important trading centres. The Hanseatic League enabled merchants to stand together in the face of political and economic challenges. The cities that were part of this network benefited from a lively exchange of goods, which led to prosperity and cultural flourishing. Nowadays, the term "Hanseatic" is not only used in a historical context, but also has a modern meaning. Cities that were once members of the Hanseatic League proudly bear the title "Hanseatic City". This title symbolises not only the historical connection to trade, but also a special cultural identity characterised by traditions, architecture and customs.

The term "Hanseatic" has also found use outside of Germany. It is used in various contexts to refer to trading communities, maritime traditions and the spirit of international exchange. In the world of business and trade in particular, "Hanseatic" is used as a synonym for a strong trading tradition and economic co-operation. "Hanseatic" is therefore more than just a historical term. It is a symbol of an era of flourishing trade, cultural diversity and cohesion. The Hanseatic League not only shaped the history of European cities, but also left behind a cultural heritage that is still alive today. The term remains a bridge between the rich past and the modern importance of trade, culture and co-operation.
