Additional info/contents Greensleeves is an English song whose melody has been one of the most popular in history since the Elizabethan era. From the 17th century onwards, the melody was also used in various songs for Christmas and New Year, first appearing in 1642 as a spiritual song for New Year's Day under the title The old yeare now gone is fled. In the 19th century, several lyrics to the melody were spread, each ending with the words “On Christmas Day in the morning”. The English song What Child Is This? by William Chatterton Dix (1837–1898) is today the best-known Christmas carol, which follows the melody of Greensleeves.
