Additional info/contents	This piece was commissioned by the Dutch province of Groningen for the celebrations commemorating the liberation festivities in 1987. In the composition, the dream of a world without war is symbolized. It is the first composition in a series in which Jacob de Haan combines concert music with pop music in a style, which reminds one of film music.

Programme notes *: The Second World War has left deep marks in Groningen. The city was occupied in May 1940 without resistance by the German troops. 3300 inhabitants died in the war, including 2800 Jewish citizens of Groningen. Until the Shoah there was a flourishing Jewish community in Groningen. For example, Attila Groningen was the oldest Jewish gymnastics and sports club in Europe, six months older than Bar Kochba Berlin. He was nationally oriented and rejected emigration to Palestine and cooperation with the Zionist Makkabi clubs. In 1940, 3000 Jews lived in Groningen, including 250 Jewish refugees from Germany. The first 600 Groningen Jews were already deported in August 1942; the deportations to the labour and extermination camps ended in April 1943. Only a few Groningen Jews managed to disappear and survive. At the end of the Second World War, the city suffered considerable damage. When the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division of the Allies reached Groningen in April 1945, it met with fierce resistance from the German occupation troops, parts of the Waffen-SS Landstorm Nederland, and Belgian SS units. Three days, from 14 to 16 April, the street fights in the inner city lasted until the German troops capitulated.
