Alfred Reed's Fourth Symphony is a significant work in the literature for symphonic wind orchestra. This symphony, consisting of three movements - Elegy, Intermezzo and Tarantella - shows Reed's masterful ability to combine emotional depth and technical brilliance. Each of the three pieces has its own character and offers the musicians and listeners a varied and exciting musical journey.

Movement 1: The first movement, the Elegy, begins with a gentle and insistent basic rhythm, first heard in the flutes, while the oboe introduces the main theme. These motifs are developed throughout the wind orchestra, using the different timbres to create different moods. The music alternates between sad, song-like passages and highly dramatic moments, but remains primarily non-tonal in structure and feeling throughout. The movement ends gently on an E minor chord, creating a subtle and reflective conclusion.

Movement 2: In the second movement, the Intermezzo, a graceful and lively theme is presented, with just a hint of Latin American flair. This theme is developed primarily in the woodwinds, which create a light and flowing character through their specific timbres. The movement is predominantly in 5/8 time, giving it a lively and unconventional rhythm. A special role is played by the harp, which sometimes sounds almost like a large Spanish guitar, accompanying the various melodic lines. This combination of woodwind and percussion colours, complemented by the harp, creates a unique and enchanting sound world.

Movement 3: The third movement, the Tarantella, is a stark contrast to the previous Intermezzo. This fiery and lively Tarantella is based on a fugue-like theme, which is developed with all the virtuosity inherent in a modern, fully integrated wind section. The movement is characterized by its fast tempo and complex polyphony, which showcases the technical brilliance of the orchestra. The music drives forward relentlessly, culminating in a brilliant and triumphant conclusion that ends both the movement and the entire symphony on a radiant climax.

Alfred Reed's Fourth Symphony is an outstanding work that demands the versatility and technical skill of a symphonic wind orchestra at the highest level. The Elegy offers deep emotional expressiveness, the Intermezzo enchants with its graceful and exotic sounds, and the Tarantella impresses with its virtuosity and energy. This variety makes the symphony a valuable part of the wind orchestra repertoire.

The composition is frequently performed by professional wind orchestras and is popular with both musicians and listeners. The demanding structure and rich texture of the music provide a rewarding challenge for the performers and a fascinating listening experience for the audience.
