Programme notes *: additional text

The first movement was suitably named intro. Numerous composition-techniques take their turns here: canonstyle, question and answerstyle, melodical and rhythmical móments, strong accents and tender legato; so a lot of material for the orchestra to display all its aspects to the audience.
The second movement is called simple. A simple two-part melody gently rocks to and fro, supported by pedal notes in the basses.
Gaily is the most difficult part of the piece. The very rhythmical opening is in sharp contrast with the second movement. Following a section where several groups play a game of question and answer, there is a melodic part supported by a syncopated rhythm.
The fourth movement is a beautiful chorale with long phrases, which interweave like wickerwork. All parts are equally important and the percussionpart gives a modern tinge.
The title of the last movement Obstinate or headstrong, mainly refers to the accompaniment of the basses, which obstinately repeat the same motive, after an opening with fourth intervals. In the end the stubborn basses are coaxed towards a grand finale by the rest of the orchestra.
