Composer Lendvay, Kamilló
Difficulty level 5
Evaluation level of countries A5 (Austrian E level); C4 (Swiss 1st class); D5 (German highest level)
Duration 8:40
Additional info/contents Following the form of the Italian baroque "Sinfonia" that later developed into the classic overture, the composer used this fast-slow-fast structure. Lendvay, a Kossuth Prize recipient, exhibits his great attraction to Igor Stravinsky's unique rhythms and implied tonal centers. This scoring requires mature performers and a conductor sensitive to that craft.

Festspiel Overture was commissioned by the 'Festliche Musiktage Uster' Switzerland, and was premiered by the 'Züricher Blasorchester, on the annual concert of the event on September 1985.

The "Festival Overture" by Kamilló Lenvay is a remarkable composition for wind orchestra that draws inspiration from the form of the Italian Baroque sinfonia. This traditional structure, consisting of a fast, a slow and a fast section again, is skilfully used by Lenvay to create a layered and sophisticated musical narrative.

The overture begins with an energetic and lively first movement that immediately captures the audience's attention. This fast opening shows Lenvay's skill in using rhythmic motifs and contrapuntal elements typical of Baroque music. The fast section serves as a kind of musical introduction, introducing listeners to a dynamic and suspenseful atmosphere.

This exciting opening is often followed by a slow movement that contrasts with the previous rapidity. This slow section shows Lenvay's ability to compose lyrical melodies and expressive harmonies that convey emotional depth and calm. The musical design in this part allows the musicians to show their interpretive skills and shape the melodic lines with sensitive expressiveness.

The closing fast movement brings the overture to an energetic and powerful finale. This part is often characterized by virtuoso passages and fiery rhythms that bring the piece to a triumphant conclusion. Lenvay uses the full sonority of the wind orchestra, including the brass and percussion, to create a radiant and festive atmosphere that fills the audience with enthusiasm.

Kamilló Lenvay's "Festival Overture" places high demands on the musicians and the conductor. It requires mature musical interpretation and a deep understanding of the specific requirements of each musical passage. The fast sections demand technical precision and stamina, while the slow movement requires sensitivity and musical expressiveness. A sensitive conductor is crucial to make the transitions between the different sections seamless and to effectively convey the entirety of the musical narrative.

Overall, Kamilló Lenvay's "Festival Overture" is an outstanding example of the application of classical forms and structures in modern wind orchestra music. With its fast-slow-fast structure and rich orchestral sound palette, it offers musicians and listeners alike a thrilling and challenging musical experience.
