Additional info/contents This work, composed in 1985, aims to be evocative and evocative. Humanity today is threatened by many dangers which it cannot avert with its own strength. It needs help from a higher power. The chorale "Aus tiefer Not schrei' ich zu dir" (Out of deep need I cry to you) indicates this. This motif appears in manifold variations. But, in his arrogance, godless man does not believe in the rule of evil demons in the world. The Gregorian melody of the sequence "Dies irae" ("Day of Wrath") from the Mass for the Dead announces the approach of catastrophe: without God, man goes astray. He falls into perdition. To deepen the forcefulness of these "incantations", I quote in the last part of this work a dramatic episode from my symphony "Die nostrae aetatis angoribus" (Of the fear of our time).
